I used to have a friend that like to fly dangerously he’s not with us anymore.
Never fly dangerously.
Well done video. What camera were you using? Good stabilization and decent audio without the wind noise overwhelming it. My FireFly was damaged last year. I really miss it. Thanks for posting.
It's just and old GoPro 7 I think (with image stabilization). I hope you get your Firefly back up. I enjoy your videos as well.
@@kyqx Well, good job. Fly safe and have fun!
I imagine some guys probably "hot rod" these Kolbs for added performance.
There's not much of a reason to. Keep them light for the best low and slow flying.
Another good airplane video with azole music !
Just purchasing an AeroVee-powered Sonex, and so wishing it had the Jabiru!
There really is a big difference between the two engines!
How comfortable is the plane for cross country flights? How is it with 2 people?
That really is amazing! My Sonex kit ships in November and I love seeing how other Sonex handles. I’ve never flown one b4 so it’s good to see them in action. I went with a Jab 3300.
Which engine and how do you like it?
Jabiru 3300 and I've been very happy with it. I would not put any other engine in one.
Hey Kip, fantastic video of the eclipse.....I noticed you had a little rudder control in at the begining of the video, am i correct or was that trim?
Hi, Andy. There will be ruddervator deflection during cruise flight. The tab on the mini rudder will deflect the ruddervators to cancel the left turning tendencies. Torque is probably most at play here, especially with the Jabiru. I would imagine that the ruddevators would be steramlined only with zero engine power.
I guess that’s never even considered or even noticed "ever" unless you have the camera there...I believe that is the best video footage I have seen in a long time, good on you for experimenting with camera angles…you have given me some good ideas for reference in the future
@@pandyseven I have some forward and backward looking takeoff and landing videos that I'll publish next week if you like these. Not too exciting but maybe Waiex pilots will appreciate them:)
Really cool, do you still fly the challies?
What was he reaching for behind his head?
Beautiful ride. I hope to do it someday on my FJR 1300.
Jabiru engines have a mixed reputation! What's your secret? Yours is clearly relaible.
1085 hours now. Keep them cool and fly weekly.
Is that a Kolb in the hanger at rhe beginning?
A Firestar II.
waiex price ready to take off ?
Nicely done - just watched this for the first time. Was too busy for 9 years building and lately just been flying.
Very enjoyable video. Before I get anymore excited over the Waiex can anyone tell me if a guy 6"-3" would fit in one? Thanks~
Thank you. I can't speak from experience but if you have the "lowered seat mod" you can likely still fit. Try to find a local flyer to take a trial fit.
@@kyqxthanks I’m near Modesto California if anyone reading this can help.
you still fly?
I certainly do.
Are you still in GA?
I flew one several years ago, this one was very light and balanced on the flight controls and the 6-cyl Continental engine was smooth as glass! Great flying airplane if a little short-coupled and sporty on the ground!!!
Excellent
Great !!!
How's the Jab Gen 4 doing?
Very nice!
what airspeeds /rpms do you fly it at, approach, cruise, Vx, Vy, etc is that ultraprop II ? what degree pitch blocks? static max RPM ?
@@embededfabrication4482 As I said, I go by feel. If you need a reference, 50 mph is a nice target. This assumes that your airspeed indicator is correct. It's a high drag aircraft. Just fly it like you're low on speed during takeoff and landing and you'll be fine. You'll be able to adjust as you get a few hours in.
Do you want to sell that Kolb ? 😆🤘
Cool video 🤘😆🤘- Bro what do these cost on average. There’s a fire star 2 on CL for $9.700 . Does that sound fair? It’s got a MZ 202 63 hp motor and over all looks clean.
Good morning from Washington state USA thanks for your share and it's great flying 🥰👍👍🙏🙏
I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
@@kyqx yes sir, I am, I planned to build or have one just like your, thanks and have a wonderful holidays. 👍 👍
what is that tool you use to bend the tail spars at 15:30 min?
Very nice Kolb, brother, but don't ever trust the engine from anywhere you don't have a place to glide to and land if engine were to fail✌️
I had a Firestar II as well and it was a fun plane to fly. Good handling , economical to operate. If you had to the wings could be folded making it compact to store. I only wish was that it was a true two place with dual controls. The second seat was very tight making only suitable for a petite adult or child. I eventually sold my Kolb to finance a Challenger II. I do miss the Firestar.
Some top-notch flying there, Captain…
You have great airplane taste, sir. I am a fan of both the Sonex and the Firestar. Did you build your Firestar? I own a few EAB acft but sadly have not yet gathered up the courage to start building one. I do want to build one in the future, probably when I retire. Flying and maintaining an aircraft that you built yourself must be an incredibly satisfying experience. Cheers from Brasilia, Brazil.
Does the plane sound like a harley or a buzz saw ?
Neither of those thankfully. It's more like a P-51.
@@kyqx 😀 😄 😆 😅 🤣 🤔
can't just have quiet while viewing the aircraft gotta have some shitty fucking music
Wow, this is one great looking airplane!! Congratulations!! Nice to see that you still have it and have put over 900 hours on it. Must be a real special feeling to go up in the sky in an airplane you built yourself. Love the orange livery. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
Thanks! It has been a great and very practical airplane.
@@kyqx is your waiex statically stable in the pitch axis? I got to make a several flights in a Monett Moni in the early 90's (here in central Brazil). It was statically unstable in pitch. However, that example had been poorly built and setup imo. I suspect that characteristic had to do with that particular moni. I am a huge fan of the Sonex and Waiex. They look awesome, are affordable to build and fly, and go like stink. Yes the y-tail is sexier, but the moni flights I made kind of make me biased towards the regular-tailed version. Both look great imo.
@@sganzerlag The Sonex line are designed to be neutrally stable in pitch. It goes where you point it and stays there. The objective is to be maneuverable and therefore more fun to fly than the standard Cessna. It's ideal for a "sportplane". However, my Waiex becomes slightly unstable in pitch at the aft CG limit. There is a slight acceleration in the direction of input and yes it's not desirable. I only fly in this area with a heavy passenger and light fuel, maybe 1% of the time. Perhaps your Moni was near the aft CG limit?
@@kyqx got it. That sounds perfectly fine to me. The moni I flew probably had the incidence set wrong on the fixed portion of the v-tail. Because the trim system was a spring and not an aerodynamic tab, having the wrong (negative) incidence angle on the tail would cause this behavior. Like I said, the build workmanship was not good on that Moni and I am pretty sure the problem there was an incorrect incidence angle on the fixed part of the v-tail. That particular Moni had the 30 hp kfm engine and riveted wings. Aside from the aforementioned quirk, it flew well and had good performance. Knowing that the Waiex does not exhibit this particular trait makes me more confident about it being a build / setup issue of that Moni I flew. I also really appreciate you explaining that your Waiex has been a great airplane for all these years and hours. Nice to know that they hold up well. Thanks for sharing your Waiex experience here on YT.
@@sganzerlag I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my videos. That's why I made them. I wanted to build a Moni in 1986 but I was too young and had no money. 20 years later, I bought the Moni's older brother!
Trading a little airspeed for altitude, nice!
You gotta do what you gotta do.
how thick is the plexi on the windshield, is that something you made up yourself?
what diameter is that prop? kolb is saying 62" for the 3 blades?
@@kyqx can you pull start it in flight? it looks like the 13" tires, they're big enough?
Great to see the Waiex flying!
I've been getting around with it. I just posted this clip from last year to show my neighbors house to them which is visible on short final!
Didn’t know they had a runway
It's a bit of a scam. It's a "public" airport with no way to leave the property without trespassing. It's likely a way to get ferderal airport funds for a what is basically a private airport.
Didn’t know they had a runway
Bleed set up.... I understand Challenger 604 any special bleed air set up? Knowing that is a very high altitude airport.
Landed there so many times ❤️
Lears are the sht!!!! Love'em since about 10 yrs old! You fly'em with trim and no goin above flt level 30 with no AP, please correct me....it's been a while.
